Bird Nesting Boxes

Gardens, since the early days, are considered as an important area for bird nesting, resting, and feeding. Birds do come in to do their own ways of living, but most of them consider the garden as their nesting place. For this fact, it would be good if you create a bird nest box that birds can use in case their situation calls for it. The boxes can be designed in a number of ways, then giving you the right to choose exactly what suits your preferences best.

There are a lot of factors that people should consider when building bird nesting boxes. What counts as the most important is the design. Well, basically, the bird nesting boxes are made without any standard design. The main idea behind this is that the birds, by nature, don’t insist on having their nesting place mathematically accurate. All that they need is something that is comfortable, secure, and of course, weatherproof. The site should also be safe from all sorts of predators, and since they favor different types of comfortable locations, you can create a nesting box for them to stay while on their nesting phase.

Although no standard design is available for the birds’ nest, most people consider constructing either the open-fronted type of nest box, or the one with a circular front hole. These two basic designs can accommodate birds, but they come with varying sizes to suit species of birds.

The materials used for creating the bird nesting boxes also matters a lot when it comes to building a model for the garden birds. Most people use wood as their main material. The good thing about the wood is that they can be used for such purpose regardless of their appearance and texture. You can use a hardwood or softwood, old or new, planed or rough, depending on what you prefer. So to make it easier for you to determine which type of wood works best, just employ whatever is available. Note the ideal wood thickness though which is about 0.75 inches.

In case you want to apply some wood preservatives for the bird nesting boxes, just make sure to treat the outside part of the box only. You can choose between the Cuprinol, Enselle, or Sadolin as your creosote preservative options. Any of these choices can help lengthen the life of the nesting box and they can also help in repelling water.

From there, one should consider the setting of the bird nesting boxes, which is but necessary to ensure the safety and security of the birds. Well, as mentioned, one should make sure that the nest is safe from predator attacks. With that, always note the height of the bird nesting boxes when building it. It would make a lot of sense if you’ll create hanging bird nesting boxes to make sure that it’s free from sprawling cats or squirrels attack. You can also make sure that the nest box is secured enough by way of fixing in thorny bush or by surrounding it with wires around the entrance. Fixing a metal plate on the box itself can also help keep serious threats away.

While the height and access are considered, don’t also forget to take note the number of bird nesting boxes you wish to create. Include this on your bird nesting box plans to make sure that nothing is overlooked. You can build more boxes if you wish to attract more birds.

Important Tip: When installing or fixing bird nesting boxes, never ever place it near the feeding area. Note that feeders are designed to attract species of birds that do come and go. As such, the birds’ regular comings and goings will alter and even prevent nesters to breed in the box. The effect would be is that you are driving these birds away from it.
