Window Bird Feeders

If you are a bird lover, nothing really beats seeing your feathered friends very closely. Window bird feeders are indeed excellent methods for you to take photographs instead of setting up cameras near a bird feeder that can sometimes scares a bird. Putting your mini-blinds down with its slats opened horizontally can allow you to clearly observe birds at window bird feeders, without those feathered creatures seeing you. The mini-blinds will generally act as barriers that can make the bird watchers not easily seen by the birds.

There are different bird feeders that can easily be mounted on your window to attract birds and bird food varies with the style of window bird feeders used. For the humming bird feeders, try to have the saucers or the tube style feeders that can easily be attached to a glass window using suction cups. Seed feeders are also another type of window bird feeders that are often clear acrylics, offering better viewing.

Making A Window Bird Feeder

There are a lot of possible ways on making your windowsills as the feeding shelves. The first thing to do is to attach a half-inch thick cedar or pine piece of wood to the outside of your window. Make it a point that the length of the wood is similar with the windowsill. You can use brackets to attach the feeding shelf to the board of the wall. Additionally, brackets can also be attached on a portion of the top portion of a board. The board will then be attached firmly to the shelf of your window frame. Once you have done that, you can start attaching an inch-high lip to the end and the side of the shelf that is exposed. This is to prevent the seeds from being blown off.

To keep the place easy to maintain, make the longer side of the lip quite shorter than the board’s length, leaving about a gap two-inches wide. This can prevent the seed in collecting in the front parts of the feeder. Keep in mind also that drainage is very important. If possible, install your window bird feeder a bit tilted so that water can be easily drained through the corners of the feeder that has been left open. Another practical solution is to simply drill holes in the window bird feeder at specific point to further allow drainage. Treat your feeding shelves with sealers to increase its life. To hold seeds, the seed bins can actually be rigged up on one of its end.

Positive Features Of Window Bird Feeders

Window bird feeders can easily be filled with birdseeds from the indoor, provided that you can have access to open the window. You can also have the opportunity to watch birds right at comfort of your home. It also prevents window strikes because birds tend to become more focused on their bird food instead of the window’s reflection. Lastly, window bird feeders do provide little protections from predators that are too wary in venturing closely to your home.

The downside though of having window bird feeders is that this could cause some mess closer to your home. Aside from that, squirrels can also access these types of feeders, which are actually very common gripes. It is advised then that using hummingbird window feeders, safflower seeds, and plain suet can do the trick.

The types of birds that are easily attracted to a window bird feeder include the chickadee, nuthatches, Carolina Wren, mockingbird, finches, hummingbirds, orioles, northern cardinals, rose-breasted grosbeak, and the woodpeckers.

Bird lovers and bird watchers really love to have the window feeders. An intimate viewing pleasure of the beauty of birds up close is one thing that bird lovers truly enjoy. Although some wild birds take a lot of your time and your patience until they are finally comfortable enough to visit your window bird feeders, the wait is well worth it once you started to see them right at your windows.
